Why do you want to buy expensive presents?
Do you think that an expensive gift means it was carefully considered before being bought? Or perhaps you think that an expensive gift means it’s a memorable one? Well, you’ll be surprised to learn that none of this is true. Expensive gifts are neither gifts that have been carefully thought through before being bought, nor do they necessarily make for a memorable gift. Below, we’ll discuss the reasons that might make you think twice before buying an expensive gift – and perhaps even change your mind.

Spending more money on gifts doesn’t equate to more love.
Do you think that if you buy more expensive gifts, they’ll bring more love? You’ve often seen men buying expensive gifts for their wives or girlfriends on various occasions. Generally speaking, many people try to buy love by giving expensive gifts. But does it really work? The answer is very simple: expensive gifts do not bring you more love, nor do they bring you closer. Gifts given from the heart, combined with small gestures and sincere affection, are what really matter.

Spending more money on gifts does not necessarily make for a memorable gift.
A group of psychologists organised a study to find out about gift-giving trends and what gifts actually achieve. The study involved 237 participants, who were randomly divided into two groups: those who give gifts and those who receive them. The psychologists asked the first group to recall the last gift they had given to someone for their birthday, and the second group to recall a gift they had recently received for their birthday. The result of the study was quite amusing. Those who had given presents immediately recalled the expensive gifts they’d given, whilst the others, who had received presents, struggled to recall any expensive gifts they’d received recently. Instead, they recalled funny gifts, such as personalised items – from mugs and T-shirts to sweets and magnets, etc.

The study concluded:

Those who give gifts expect the recipients to be just as excited, but the recipients do not value a gift based on how much it cost.

In other words, the price tag usually doesn’t matter to the recipients. So, the amount of money spent on gifts doesn’t make the gift memorable. So, why buy expensive gifts?

Spending more money on presents can create higher expectations of you in the future.
Your current financial situation might allow you to buy expensive gifts for everyone in your family. Suddenly, everyone starts expecting one of those expensive gadgets from you every time. But you might not be able to keep up with this sort of gift-giving all the time.

When you create expectations in someone’s mind and fail to meet them all the time, it can end badly. Therefore, when you buy someone an expensive gift, that person will get used to receiving the same sort of gift. When you stop doing this, you’ll create a sense of insecurity or disappointment in that person’s mind. That person might think they’ve done something wrong, or that you no longer care about them enough, which could affect your relationship. So why take the risk of buying expensive gifts?
